Dating back to the XVII century, the French expression à la bonne franquette means a simple, relaxed, convivial, and sometimes improvised meal. At the time, it was a used to make a distinction between the highly formalised meals eaten at court, and the simple and less constrained meals prepared by the common people. This phrase intended to make a difference between eating “à la française”  and sharing an unceremonious meal “à la franquette.” The suffix “ette”, implied the idea of eating “frankly, quite simply”.

Today, the expression is still popular and has retained the same meaning, minus the idea of frankness. To share a meal à la bonne franquette is also synonymous with à la fortune du pot, or a potluck meal, where everyone contributes.

The bakery model is built around this concept. At Franquette, we believe that simple is better when made from the start. We try to use locally sourced raw materials and there is no room for harmful chemicals or additives in our baked products. Franquette uses sustainable flour milled in NSW from Australian farmers; the chicken is free range and cooked on site; the eggs are cage free; the ham is nitrite free, and the fruits and vegetables are delivered fresh from the local grocer.

Franquette is a bakery that makes its guests feel welcome and frankly, at home.
